Statistics on deaths in the RA and NK Armed Forces in the first half of 2020
From January to June 2020, Peace Dialogue NGO managed to obtain information on 27 death cases registered in the RA and NK Armed Forces.
During the reporting period, 1 serviceman was killed in a ceasefire violation. 2 servicemen were murdered by fellow soldiers. 8 servicemen committed suicide. 8 servicemen died in fatal incidents. Health problems caused death for 5 servicemen. 1 serviceman died due to violation of safety rules and 1 serviceman – due to negligent attitude towards service or official inaction. Another serviceman died from a fatal injury as a result of mine explosion.
According to the information provided by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, in the period from 1 January to 31 May 2020, 7 deaths of soldiers and contract servicemen of the RA and NK Armed Forces were registered as not related to military service.
* With regard to one of the death cases registered in the record, Peace Dialogue NGO did not manage to find out the identity of the RA MoD contracted serviceman who committed suicide. The verified data on the case will be posted on the informative database of www.safesoldiers.am and will be published in the report at the end of the year.
Below, we introduce the numbers of deaths registered in the first half of 2020 according to the causes of death.
Out of 27 registered incidents, 15 took place in the RA Armed Forces and 12 occurred in the NK Armed Forces.
In connection with 10 of the above-mentioned incidents, no defense agencies reported an official statement; therefore, neither the RA nor the NK Ministries of Defense were the primary source of information on these cases of death.
Comparing the numbers of deaths in the RA and NK Armed Forces in the first half of the years of 2018, 2019, and 2020, it becomes clear that in the same period, there were 24 deaths in 2018, 29 deaths in 2019, and 27 deaths registered in 2020, which testifies to the fact that there is no deterioration of the situation, on the other hand it is too early to talk about improvement of the situation with regard to decrease of deaths in the RA and NK Armed Forces.
