Statistics on Deaths in the RA Armed Forces in 2024

From January to December 2024, Peace Dialogue NGO documented 33 deaths within the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia. Typically, we obtain additional data from the Prosecutor’s Office to verify cases not publicly disclosed or unavailable in open sources. In previous years, the Prosecutor’s Office has provided timely and detailed responses, including names and causes of death.

However, this year, the process was significantly delayed. Instead of the legally mandated 30 working days, the response took 61 working days. Furthermore, the Prosecutor’s Office withheld the names of the deceased, providing only the number of fatalities and their causes. According to their report, 40 deaths occurred in 2025—seven more than we were able to confirm independently.

During the reporting period, 4 servicemen were killed in a ceasefire violation. 7 servicemen committed suicide. 20 servicemen (13 of whom were identified by Peace Dialogue) died from fatal incidents. Health problems caused death for 3 servicemen. 1 serviceman died due to violation of safety rules. 5 servicemen became victims of murder committed by fellow servicemen.

According to the information provided by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, in the period from 1 January to 31 December 2024, 27 out of 40 deaths of soldiers and contract servicemen of the RA Armed Forces were registered as related to military service.

By comparing the number of deaths registered in the Armed Forces in the last five years, it becomes obvious that the highest number of deaths occurred due to fatal incidents (110 cases), health problems (73 cases), and ceasefire violations (72 cases). It should be noted that deaths due to fatal incidents and health problems are generally mentioned by the Prosecutor’s Office as cases not related to military duty.
