Statistics on Deaths in the RA and NK Armed Forces in the First Half of 2021
From January to June 2021, Peace Dialogue NGO managed to obtain information on 25 death cases registered in the RA and NK Armed Forces.
During the reporting period, 1 serviceman was killed in a ceasefire violation. 4 servicemen committed suicide. 11 servicemen died in fatal incidents. Health problems caused death for 8 servicemen. 1 serviceman died due to violation of safety.
According to the information provided by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, in the period from 1 January to 31 May 2021, 11 out of 25 deaths of soldiers and contract servicemen of the RA and NK Armed Forces were registered as not related to military service.
* One of the death cases registered in the record was not included in the information provided by the Prosecutor General’s Office but was published by the NK Ministry of Defense. Peace Dialogue found out discrepancy regarding 2 soldiers’ surnames provided by the Prosecutor’s Office and the RA Ministry of Defense.
Below, we introduce the numbers of deaths registered in the first half of 2021 according to the causes of death.
Out of 25 registered incidents, 16 took place in the RA Armed Forces and 9 occurred in the NK Armed Forces.
Place of death
In connection with 13 of the above-mentioned incidents, no defense agencies reported an official statement; therefore, neither the RA nor the NK Ministries of Defense were the primary source of information on these cases of death.
Primary source of information on deaths
The comparison of the numbers of deaths in the RA and NK Armed Forces in the first half of the years of 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 shows that the number of deaths registered this year has relatively decreased: there were 33 deaths in 2018, 30 deaths in 2019, and 33 deaths in 2020.
